Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord wrote her name in the history books after completing the first round of the Telkom Women’s Classic played at Zwartkop Country Club, when she achieved the best first-round score in the history of the Ladies African Tour, and also carded a personal career best of 62, -10 under par for the tournament.

The 22 year old from Sarpsborg, Norway started the day with back-to-back birdies on the 2nd and 3rd holes. Then, pushing her tee shot into the rough on the par five 4th hole, she recovered with a rescue club, to hole her chip from nine metres off the green, carding the only eagle of the day.

On -4 under par at the turn, she then converted four consecutive birdies on the 10th through 13th holes, and backed it up with a superb downhill five-metre putt on the par three 15th hole, to card yet another birdie.

The Norwegian just survived the par five 16th hole after holing a four-metre putt for par. She went on to end an historic day with a easy putt on the 18th for her final birdie and a four shot lead.

" I just played shot for shot. I am ready to do it all again tomorrow, more birdies and perhaps another eagle," said a delighted Skarpnord.

Second on the overnight leaderboard, Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen may have struggled with the South African heat, but she didn’t finish her first round without a fight for the title. Only four shots behind the leader, Sorensen had back-to-back birdies on the 4th and 5th holes.

Paired with Wednesday’s leader, Sorensen teed off the 8th with a three wood, and even though her wedge shot into the pin was long, she managed to hole an eight-metre putt for her third birdie.

Her only blemish on her scorecard came on the 10th hole, when her indecision on club selection cost her as she hit an eight iron short, and three-putted to drop a shot.

The Dane then picked up four more birdies on the back nine, 11th, 13th, 16th and 18th holes to finish on a score of 68, -4 under for the tournament. "The course is great. I didn’t miss a fairway today. I am ready for a great start tomorrow, a few pars in and then I will begin my attack," said an eager Sorensen.

Leading South African is Caryn Louw, six shots behind the leader with a first round score of 68, while Marne Roos leads the amateurs in the field one shot back with a first round of 69. The second round of the Telkom Women’s Classic gets underway at the Zwartkop Country Club tomorrow (Thursday) at 07h00 with the leaders off at 09h00, and entrance is free to spectators.
