A host of Banyana Banyana stars are plying their trade overseas and bringing that global experience home to boost South African women’s football and make a strong case for the game turning professional in South Africa. In this week’s #gsportTop10, we salute ten of these stars, who are inspiring a new generation of athletes.
Banyana Banyana captain and Glasgow City FC recruit, Janine van Wyk, leads the list, which also includes Jermaine Seoposenwe (Sporting Braga) and Leandra Smeda (Famalicao) who play in Portugal. Noko Matlou and Thembi Kgatlana who play for SD Eibar in Spain also make the list.
AC Milan’s Refiloe Jane continues to make impressive strides as is a new brigade including Swedish-based Linda Motlalho (Djurgardens IF), Kholosa Biyana (Sporting Gijon), Dinamo Minsk duo Lebo Ramalepe and Rhoda Mulaudzi, with more likely to follow in their footsteps.

Janine van Wyk
Janine van Wyk is one of the early movers into the global football women’s club playing space. Her time at Houston Dash inspired many to follow in her footsteps. Her latest signing with Glasgow City FC shows her ability to always bounce back no matter the challenges she faces.
Jermaine Seoposenwe
Jermaine is a dynamic player who has made an immediate impression at SC Braga in Portugal. She became the talk of the town when she scored two goals for her club to help them win the Portuguese Cup.
Kholosa Biyana
Kholosa is targeting major success in Spain and believes doors opened for SA women footballers following their appearance at the 2019 FIFA World Cup. She signed with Real Sporting from UWC Ladies’ Football Club late last year and looks set to keep rising on the world stage.
Leandra Smeda
Senior Banyana Banyana player, Leandra, is going places since earning a professional contract with Lithuanian giants, Gintra Universitetas in 2018. Last year, she joined Swedish side Vittsjö and made history with the club after winning a medal for the first time in the club’s existence, finishing the season in third place. She is now with Portuguese giants, Famalicao, where she is hoping for more success.
Lebo Ramalepe
Lebo Ramalepe is making headlines with her formidable play for Dinamo Minsk in the Belarusian League. She recently scored in her team’s victory to lift the Belarusian Super Cup. She was also involved in the club’s success when they won the Belarus Women’s League in October last year.
Linda Motlhalo
Linda Motlhalo scooped Newcomer of the Year award at Swedish club Djurgårdens IF Fotboll in her debut season. The Banyana Banyana star has been on the rise over the years having previously turned out for Houston Dash and Beijing BG Phoenix in USA and China, respectively.
Noko Matlou
Veteran Banyana Banyana players, Noko Matlou, wants to inspire the next generation to dream big following her signing with Spain’s ED Eibar. As Noko approaches 35, she is keen to play on the global stage for as long as possible. She is the first South African, male or female, to be crowned CAF African Footballer of the Year.
Refiloe Jane
Refiloe Jane has made game changing moves in her footballing career that has boosted the image of SA women’s football and inspired many of her team mates to follow in her footsteps. Signing with AC Milan was the cherry on top following years of hard work that also saw her make history by becoming the first South African women’s player to feature in the Australian women’s football league.
Rhoda Mulaudzi
Rhoda Mulaudzi looks set to dominate the international scene for years to come. Her explosive start at Dinamo Minsk has resulted in historic successes for her club and together Lebo Ramalepe has ensured that they have quickly become household names in Belarusian Women’s Football.
Thembi Kgatlana
The 2020 Momentum gsport Athlete of the Year has been shattering barriers for the past few years and her recent signing with SD Eibar has shown that this dynamic playmaker has much more in the tank to produce match winning performances.
