To commemorate Youth Day, our #gsportTop10 shines the spotlight on a rising crop of South African sport stars who are succeeding on the global stage and playing their part in putting the country on the map.
All recipients of the #gsportTop10 list have set impeccable milestones in their respective sporting codes.
The list includes power athletics duo Banele Shabangu and Zenéy van der Walt, top performing swimmer, Lara van Niekerk and Olympian Caitlin Rooskrantz.
2021 Momentum gsport Awards SuperSport School Sport Star winner, Miyanda Maseti also makes the list along with Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies footballer, Miché Minnies, Momentum Proteas’ Tumi Sekhukhune, triathlete Kira Ribbink, para-sport star Simoné Kruger and SA diving champion Zalika Methula.
This year, these young stars have all pushed the boundaries to inspire the next generation.

Introducing #gsportTop10 Youth Stars
Banele Shabangu – Athletics
Sprint sensation, Shabangu, has been living up to expectations on the tracl. At the ASA Track and Field National Championships in April 2022, the 19-year-old burst to victory as she was crowned SA’s 200m champion.
Caitlin Rooskrantz – Gymnastics
Olympic gymnast, Rooskrantz continues to dominate, recently claiming gold with an effortless performance at the 2022 FIG World Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Cairo.
Kira Ribbink – Triathlon
One of the three Ribbink sisters, Kira, recently top performed at the 2022 Africa Triathlon Junior Cup in Tunisia where she claimed gold.
Lara van Niekerk – Swimming
Lara van Niekerk Claims Gold in Meeting Record Time in Monaco
Van Niekerk is dominating headlines across the globe as she competes in her first year as a senior international swimmer. She went on to race to gold in the 50m breaststroke event in a meeting record at the first leg of the Mare Nostrum series in Monaco.
Miché Minnies – Football
Former Vasco da Gama footballer, Minnies, caught the attention of continental champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies after she was awarded the Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Tournament at the Sasol League National Championships in February.
Miyanda Maseti – BMX
The 2021 Momentum gsport Awards SuperSport School Sport Star winner went on to successfully defend her SA BMX Championship title, shortly after her victory on the awards stage.
Simoné Kruger – Para-Sport
Kruger has been breaking her own records in the F38 Discus category as she recently set a new African time at the ASA Grand Prix Series 4 Meeting in Germiston.
Tumi Sekhukhune – Cricket
Momentum Proteas Clinch Comeback T20 Series Win Over Ireland
Sekhukhune is rising in the Momentum Proteas bowling unit as she claimed career-best figures of 3/20, which inspired the South Africans to a T20I series victory over Ireland.
Zalika Methula – Diving
Reaping the rewards of her hard work, Methula is continuously making strides as she qualified for the World Junior Diving Championships that will take place in Canada.
Zenéy van der Walt – Athletics
Van der Walt recently grabbed double gold at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius. She won the women’s 400m hurdles final in a time of 56.00 and was involved in South Africa’s 4x400m gold-medal victory.
