SA’s wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane has clinched the women’s doubles title at the Victorian Open, an ITF 1 Series event in Victoria, Australia.
Montjane and her Japanese partner, Yui Kamiji, claimed victory after defeating the Chinese pair of Luoyao Guo and Zhenzhen Zhu 6-3, 6-4, in the women’s doubles final.
Montjane will hope to take this winning momentum to the Melbourne Open, the ITF Super Series event in Melbourne which runs from 14 to 19 January, 2024, in her build-up to the Australian Open.
The Australian Open 2024 wheelchair championships will feature increased draw sizes of sixteen women, in the first Grand Slam event of the year.
Montjane will be aiming to repeat a year as good as 2023, after winning the Wheelchair Doubles French Open title alongside her Japanese partner, Yui Kamiji in June 2023.
That victory was followed by a US Open title for Montjane and Kamiji following a walkover win when their opponents, top-seeded Dutch pair Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen due to illness.
Montjane’s remaining aspirations include winning her maiden wheelchair singles title, and to progress further than her singles run in Melbourne last year, which ended in the semi-final round of the women’s event, losing to Netherlands’ Diede de Groot 6-1, 6-1.
