Landie Greyling overcame tough conditions to win the SA Marathon Road Running Championship in 2:55:01 for hosts Western Province Athletics at the Simons Town Naval Base near Cape Town in the Western Cape, on Sunday, 16 February 2025.

Greyling finished ahead of Tracey Anne Campbell of Eastern Province who grabbed the the national title race’s silver medal in 3:04:59, and Makhosazane Mhlongo – racing for KZN Athletics – earning bronze in 3:06:31 to complete the 2025 national podium.

“The wind was a factor, which made it interesting, and it was a big challenge. I’m very relieved and surprised to be the SA champ, and it was a wonderful morning out on the road. But the route is beautiful. We managed to work together in groups, but over the last 14km, everyone was out on their own and it was just a battle to the finish.”

Competing in the open race but not in provincial colours – making her ineligible for the SA title – Jenna Challenor crossed the finish line first in a time of 2:51:24 to claim the 2025 Balwin Sport Peninsula Marathon title, and she was followed home by fellow Nedbank Running Club Deanne Laubscher, who earned silver.

Greyling finished the open Peninsula Marathon race in third place, with SA Marathon silver medalist Campbell finishing sixth overall, and Mhlongo followed her in seventh place in the open contest.

The SA Marathon Road Championship was brought forward and incorporated into the 42.2km Peninsula Marathon, which set off from Main Road in Green Point at 05h15 on Sunday morning, and finished at the historic Simon’s Town Naval Sports Ground.

Last year’s winner Cian Oldknow did not return to defend her title due to a conflict of schedules.

The reasoning behind the race being brought forward is to give athletes more opportunities to qualify for the World Senior Championships in Tokyo later this year.

“ASA has moved the marathon to February to give athletes a better chance to qualify for the World Championships earlier, allowing them more time to rest and focus on other competitions,” ASA President James Moloi told SABC Sport. “ASA’s road running chairperson, Enoch Skosana, and the organisers believe that starting the marathon earlier in the year will make things easier for the athletes”.
