The South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee gave Team South Africa’s representation for the Paris Olympics a considerable boost when additional names and sporting codes were revealed its second team announcement, in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 19 June, 2024.
In addition, SASCOC further revealed financial incentives for medallists.
Mr Barry Hendricks, President of the South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC), announced the list of athletes, saying: “This is a significant step in acknowledging the remarkable achievements of our athletes.”
“This moment also marks a new milestone for our organisation as we continue our commitment to deliver a strong and competitive Team SA for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games”.
The latest announcement features a diverse range of athletes who will compete, including in athletics, cycling, hockey, rowing, rugby sevens, and triathlon, and the expanded list increases SA representation to a total of 15 sports codes, in addition to the athletes announced on 15 May.
The women’s sevens rugby squad is a preliminary squad with the final team to be announced before the end of June cut-off.
Ms Nozipho Jafta, the CEO of SASCOC, expressed her excitement with the announcement of the team. “SASCOC has aimed to support all the sporting codes to achieve Olympic qualification.”
“Through the Bidvest OPEX programme, which continues to support the athletes and teams, SASCOC has seen the fruits of the investment in the athletes, not only for qualification for Paris 2024, but also looking ahead to Los Angeles 2028.”

There are a number of athletes from Equestrian, Golf, Judo, Rowing and Skateboarding sporting codes that have achieved qualification, and their potential inclusion in Team SA will be announced in due course.
In addition, certain athletes from Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Breakdancing and Cycling codes still have an opportunity to qualify. A final squad announcement will be made at a later date, before the final cut off at the end of June 2024.
SASCOC also announced financial incentives for athletes and teams that will earn medals in Paris, the payment structures differing for relays and team sports (Hockey and Rugby), where athletes can win R100k for a gold medal, for 2-person boats, where an athlete can win R200k for a gold medal, in addition to incentives announced last month where gold-medal winning athletes will be awarded R400,000.
