South Africa secured a big improvement over their 2023 fortunes when they opened their FAST5 World Netball Series campaign with a major win over England, losing to Australia in their second tie before ending the day with a solid win over Jamaica at the Woolfbrook Arena in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Saturday, 9 November, 2023.

England and South Africa started the day’s action conservatively in the first quarter, the South Africans marginally ahead as 7-8 leaders before England who took hold of the game over the next thirty minutes, the English leading 5-3 and 10-8 in the second and third quarters respectively.

It was in Q4 where South Africa put their foot on the gas, putting in a match-winning performance to score a whopping 13 goals and seal the win in the process. Lefébre Rademan was one of the top performers, and the goal-shooter didn’t miss her attempts.

Next up were defending world champs, Australia, who dominated South Africa in this tough fixture. Martha Mosahle-Samm side’s was on the back foot from the get-go, losing the first quarter 14-3. However, they put in a better performance in the second quarter and closed the gap but still lost it 12-10.

The third quarter went the same way as the South Africans went down 14-11. They were not able to pick up the pace in the final quarter, and saw the match slip away as they lost it 9-2 and the overall match 49 – 26.

The final game of the day was against Jamaica, and South Africa turned up the heat to seal a 33-25 win over the Caribbean island team. Both teams were neck-and-neck in the first quarter, a slow one with the teams tied 3-3 at the break whistle. Q2 saw the Jamaicans take the 12-8 lead heading in to half-time.

Mosahle-Samm’s side then upped the ante as they won Q3 12-5, and finished off with a strong final quarter, South Africa sealing it 10-5 for a 33-25 win.

Sunday will see South Africa face Uganda in their first game on Sunday at 2h25am (SA Time), and former champions New Zealand at 4:40am (SA Time).
