South Africa’s hard work at the Confederation of University and College Sports Association Region V Games paid off as the football, netball, basketball and table tennis teams hauled in gold medals on Thursday, 11 July 2024 in Tshwane.
The women’s football team was outstanding in this edition of the event, so it will be no surprise that they were crowned champions after a commanding 3-nil win over Botswana saw them secure the gold medal with 20 goals scored in wins in four games, and conceded just a single goal, they were worthy winners.
Not far behind them was the basketball side who were also flawless in their campaign and also didn’t lose a match and closed the tournament off with a 90-57 victory over Zambia to capture the gold medal.

The netball team’s fine run was again on show as they claimed the gold medal thanks to a 96-30 win over Zimbabwe on Thursday evening. They have been one of the most consistent teams during the competition and their hard work and determination paid off. Earlier in the day the home team were 78-41 victors in their semi-final to Botswana.
The Women’s table tennis team also followed up Wednesday’s victory with more solid performances which saw them also win a gold medal, something that looked almost certain given their performances.
Despite some inconsistent performances, the women’s volleyball team was able to walk away with a commendable bronze medal. South Africa were able to get a 3-0 victory over Zambia, which didn’t come as a surprise as the hosts handed their African counterparts several losses on Wednesday.
The much-anticipated athletics category got underway today and it was easy to see why there was such excitement for the track and field discipline to begin. Savannah Combrink was the first woman to pick up a medal thanks to a solid performance as she won gold in Javelin.

South Africa bagged two podiums in the women’s 400m, Angelique Strijdom took gold running in a time of 0:53.78. Nicola Gibbon took home silver after finishing the race in a time of 0:54.68 as Kennekae Batisani of Botswana rounded of the top three with her bronze medal in a time of 0:54.83.
