Tasha Mentasti, who is the first woman globally to head coach a national junior surf team, has lauded the gsport Annual List event as she featured in the May Newsmakers intake.

Speaking on gsportLive on Monday, 6 June 2022, the SA National Junior Surf team coach expressed to gsport Content Lead Celine Abrahams how honoured she is to be one of May’s Newsmakers.

“Such a good feeling. I have supported gsport and what you ladies are doing for us for a long time and to be recognized, it’s just an honour and I’m really grateful for the awareness that you are creating around surfing and especially women on the sport of surfing, so thank you.”

When asked about the impact of the Newsmakers initiative, Mentasti said: “It’s had a massive impact for me personally, but I think that it’s a great platform to be able to highlight what us ladies are doing as we all know we’re involved in the sport because we’re passionate about the love of the game.

“We’re involved because of what sport has given us over the years, so to be able to highlight some of our achievements (is amazing) because it doesn’t happen overnight,” she added.

“This is 20 years in the making and to be able to have someone that supports us and is willing to share our stories and highlights and create awareness around what we are doing – I’m just really grateful and I cannot thank gsport enough for this initiative and for how you’re supporting us as ladies.”

Mentasti went on to chat about closing the visibility gap and the importance of media coverage for the growth of women’s sport. Click on the link below to watch the full chat on YouTube!
