Team South Africa brought its campaign at the World University Games to a successful close, securing medals on the final weekend of the event in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany, held from 16 to 27 July, 2025.
In all, the global event saw 8,500 Athletes and officials representing 150 nations competing in 18 sports at 23 venues spread across Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin in the 12 days of contest, and South Africa will be proud with their final showing.
Katherine Williams and Courtney Westley rowed their way to a respectable silver medal in their women’s pair rowing final. They completed the course in a time of 7:43.97, bringing glory to Team SA.
Not to be outdone, Jana van Schalkwyk secured a bronze medal in the Javelin with the massive throw of 56.73m to ensure a place on the podium.
Meanwhile, Kristi Snyman ended joint fourth in the women’s high jump final, as she reached a height of 1.84m.
The women’s 4x400m relay team narrowly missed out on a medal, however, Precious Molepo, Angelique Strydom, Annestaysha George and Marlie Viljoen finished fourth with a season’s best of 3:34.48.

Nadia Potgieter secured a 12th-place finish in the Women’s 5000m, with a time of 17:16.95, and Delien Kleinhans went down 7-5, 6-2 to Japan in a hard-fought battle in the Singles Consolation tennis final.
Colette Uys won bronze in the women’s shot put, as Olivia Nel swam to glory, also winning bronze in the 50m freestyle this past week.
South Africa’s overall medal tally was 19, and this feat saw them as the only African country to break into the Top 10 on the medal standings.
