Spectators who flocked to the iconic Ellis Park Arena to witness a day of thrilling netball encounters were rewarded with a thrilling penultimate Gauteng derby among riveting results on Day 2 of Power Week 2 of the 2024 Telkom Netball League, at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Saturday 1 June, 2024.
In the match-up of the day, with screaming fans and a filled arena, the Golden Fireballs hosted their provincial counterparts, the Jaguars. Both the teams were determined to prove who is the best in the battle of the titans, with both in action on the back of first round wins this week.
It was a fast-paced match as the Jaguars started strong, demonstrating their intentions in the first two centre passes. The Golden Fireballs then found their rhythm, and the crowd went wild.
Kamogelo Maseko’s return to the court strongly impacted the squad and youngster Kayla Dames, who pulled some magic tricks out of the hat, while the Fireballs’ Marichelle Visagie showed her consistency.
In the end, the Gauteng Jaguars edged their provincial compatriots by a slim 53 – 51 margin to regain their second place position and keep the pressure on the tournament’s Division A leaders, the Crinums.
The earlier Division A match-up between the Flames and the Aloes saw a lot of turnovers with the ball going up and down the court. The Flames put tremendous pressure on the Aloes, forcing them into errors and then capitalising on that, but could not end in the winning seat as the Aloes edged the win with a 2-goals margin.
Division B’s Diamonds posed a severe threat to log leaders the Eastern Cape Comets in their tie, and led the match for the first three quarters, but the Comets calmly came out to win the game 51 – 47 in a come-from-behind victory to admire.
An exiting day of netball ended in Joburg with the unbeaten Division A leaderboard bosses Free State Crinums making sure of a solid 51-43 win over the Southern Stings to continue the iconic team’s 2024 title ambitions.
Action continues on in a chilly Gauteng on Sunday with matches underway from 8am, while domestic netball fans around the South Africa and further in the world will be able to follow broadcast coverage on SuperSport.
