South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are winners of the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League, after beating Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies Football Club 2-0 at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday, 19 November, 2021.

The two finalist teams had both topped their group stages with 7 points from 2 wins apiece, but the South Africans arrived with a distinction of not having conceded a goal in their campaign.

Sundowns started playing a classy game from the opening whistle, a pattern marked by short passes and light touches, and soon fell into a commanding role, controlling the pace of play.

Lerato Kgasago rattled the woodwork in the 8th minute, and it was no surprise when Andisiwe Mgcoyi set up 33rd-minute goal-scorer Chuene Morifi for the first-ever goal of the continental cup’s final.

The Ghanaians were dangerous on attack, but a dedicated three-player defensive line ensured that each threat was extinguished without damage to the South Africans’ cause.

The first half ended with the South Africans holding their lead, and an increasing pressure building on Hasaacas.

The writing was large on the wall when Andisiwe Mgcoyi showed composure to slot the ball home from open play in the 65th minute, doubling Sundown’s lead after an anxious minute waiting for VAR to confirm the goal.

The South Africans finished the game with a few worries, but there was no end to the smiles that will last long into the night.
