The group-stage action of the 2024 Telkom Netball League is all but complete in spectacular fashion with an upset win in the penultimate fixture between tourmament giants the Free State Cricnums and their hosts the Gauteng Jaguars, at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg, on Saturday, 15 June, 2024.
That electric result had spectators rivited to a display of top-notch netball as the group stage action concluded for five Division A teams, with just Sunday’s Baobabs vs Aloes scheduled among a four fixtures to conclude Division B’s ties before 2024 TNL’s knockout fixtures follow on Monday.
In the highly contested match between the Gauteng Jaguars and the Free State Crinums, both teams displayed exceptional defensive skills with standout performances from players like Jamie van Wyk, Zanele Vimbela, Karla Pretorius, and Ane Ratief.
Errors in offensive play affected both teams in the high-pressue tie, and both teams struggled to find their rhythm and the flow of the ball.
The Crinums had difficulties holding onto the ball, contributing to their loss, while the Jaguars faced pressure that led to uncertain passes into the circle in a close result that feature fewer goals than these attacking combinations are accustomed to.
The thrilling matchup between the Golden Fireballs and the Southern Stings kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Fireballs didn’t start well, while the Stings struggled to close out the game.
The third quarter saw a dramatic turnaround as the Fireballs outscored the Stings 18-7, sparking a surge of momentum that forced the Stings to make adjustments. Despite their efforts, the Stings could not regain control, consequently, the Fireballs solidified their lead.
Monique Meyer’s exceptional leadership and defensive prowess, including her ability to apply pressure on the feeders, played a crucial role in the Fireballs’ 49-57 victory.
The anticipation is building as we now have the top four finishers in the A Division. All eyes will be on Monday’s matches, where the Jaguars will go head-to-head with the Stings, and the Fireballs will battle it out with the Crinums.
Earlier in the day, there was a thrilling KZN derby match between the KD Queens and KD Stars. The Queens had won the previous encounter by a two-goal lead of 49-47. However, this time, coach Precious Mthembu ensured that the Stars clinched a win with a two-goal margin of 38-40.
The Stars executed an excellent game plan, and Nozipho Ntshangase was outstanding throughout the match.
